Meaning of blog.

 A blog (weblog or web log) is a discussion or informational website published on the www consisting of discrete diary-style text entries called posts appearing in reverse chronological order.
Posts are display in reverse sequential order, so that the most recent post appears first at the top of the web page.
Originally blogs were the work of a single person or group covered a particular subject or topic not until 2009.

History of Blog

Blogs have become an essential part of online philosophy. Now, everybody reads blogs because they cover all areas of human life like latest news, technology, sciences, art and culture etc.
The first blog was created by Justin Hall with Links.net(www.links.net) in 1994 when he was a student of Swarthmore college but were not called blog.
In 1997, the word weblog came around created to reflect the process of logging the web as he browsed.

1998 marks the first known instance of a blog on a traditional news site when Jonathan Dude blogged Hurricane Bonnie for the Charlotte observer.
The programmer Peter Merholz in 1999 shortened weblog to blog and five years after, Merriam Webster declares it as word of the year.
Initially, blogs were manually updated and linked from dominant home page or archive and it was not efficient.

Few blogging platforms sprang up but only Live Journal was most recognized then.
Blogger platform (www.blogger.com) was started by Evan Williams and Meg Hourihan at Pyra Labs in 1999. Blogger brought blogging to the limelight.  
As at 1999 survey carried out by Jesse James, there were only Twenty-three(23) blogs were in existing on the internet. Blog began to gain more popularity in early year 2000 and by year 2006, almost fifty millions blogs existed according to Technorati’s report.
Later, politicians began to use blogs for their political criticism and other issues like Wesley Clark and a host of others. 

  • Gawker was the first major gossip blog launched in 2000s
  • Weblog inc. was started by Jason Calacanis in 2003 but later sold it to AOL at about $25millions.
  • Technorati was the first major blog search engine, launched in 2002.
  • Audioblogger was the first major podcasting service founded in 2003.
  • First video blogs was launched in 2004 before YouTube was founded more than five years later
  •   The first advertising platform to match ads to the content on a blog was Adsense launched in 2003.
  • Wordpress was fully started in 2003 and Typepad released in the same year.


Bloggers like Darren Rowse (www.problogger.net  and www.digital-photographyschool.net ) and John Chow made a lot of money from blogging.
